Intent
At Hudson Road Primary School, we want every child to develop a love of maths and grow into confident, capable mathematicians. We aim to make maths meaningful by linking it to real-life experiences and other areas of learning, helping children see the purpose and value of what they do.
Our maths curriculum encourages children to become resilient problem solvers who are not afraid to make mistakes or try different approaches. We want them to develop flexible thinking—understanding that there is often more than one way to tackle a problem. Whether using practical resources, pictorials or formal written methods, children are supported to choose strategies that make sense to them. Along the way, they build confidence in using mathematical language to explain their ideas clearly and logically.
We are committed to ensuring that by the time children leave Hudson Road Primary School, they will have the skills, confidence and understanding to use maths in everyday life and be well-prepared to thrive in future learning and opportunities.

Implementation
At Hudson Road Primary School, mathematics is taught in a daily, dedicated session throughout the school from reception to year 6. The Mastery approach to the teaching and learning of mathematics has been adopted to ensure that children attain solid foundations in this subject. Learning is broken down into small, manageable steps to ensure each new concept builds on prior knowledge, leading to a deeper and more consistent understanding over time.
From year 1 to year 6, children complete a daily retrieval task called the Memory Jogger. Children are given 4 questions, relating to objectives the children have previously covered in their dedicated maths lessons. Through the use of the ‘Memory Jogger’, children are given the opportunity to retrieve previously learned information and this aids in reactivating information stored in long-term memory.
Daily Maths Meetings (DMMs) are used to develop number and calculation fluency and automaticity. This session provides pupils with the opportunity to retrieve the information they have been taught and have rehearsed within the main maths lesson. This leads to children becoming proficient in core knowledge which can be recalled with speed and accuracy. This includes number facts, number bonds, multiplication facts as well as relationships and laws e.g. the commutative law.
Impact
As a result of our approach to teaching mathematics at Hudson Road Primary School, children leave us as confident, capable and enthusiastic mathematicians. They have a strong understanding of key concepts, fluency in fundamental skills, and the flexibility to apply their knowledge in different contexts. Pupils can reason mathematically, solve problems independently and communicate their thinking clearly. They understand the value of maths in everyday life and are well-prepared for the next stage of their education, with a sense of pride in what they have achieved and the belief that they can continue to succeed.
