English Curriculum Mission Statement

Intent

At Hudson Road Primary School, we intend to provide a high-quality English curriculum that develops children’s love of reading, writing, and spoken language. We aim to ensure all pupils:

  • Read widely and often for both pleasure and information
  • Write clearly, accurately, and coherently, adapting their language and style for a range of contexts
  • Develop effective communication skills through speaking and listening opportunities
  • Acquire a strong command of the English language that underpins learning across the curriculum
  • Gain the knowledge, vocabulary, and confidence to succeed academically and participate fully in society

Our curriculum is designed to be ambitious and inclusive, ensuring that every child, regardless of background or need, is equipped with the essential language and literacy skills for future success.

Implementation

Our English curriculum is taught through daily, well-sequenced lessons built around high-quality texts. We follow a systematic approach to phonics using a Little Wandle in EYFS and KS1 to build a strong foundation in early reading. In KS2, reading is developed through whole-class and guided sessions, with a focus on fluency, inference, and comprehension.

Writing is taught in meaningful contexts, often linked to reading, across a range of genres. Children are explicitly taught grammar, punctuation, and spelling, with opportunities to apply these skills in extended writing tasks. The writing process—planning, drafting, editing, and publishing—is embedded to build stamina and independence.

Speaking and listening are woven throughout the curriculum, with purposeful opportunities for discussion, debate, performance, and presentation. Assessment for learning is used regularly to inform teaching, identify gaps, and provide timely interventions. English is also embedded across the wider curriculum, allowing pupils to apply and extend their speaking, reading and writing skills in other subjects.

Impact

By the end of their time at Hudson Road Primary School, pupils will:

  • Be confident, fluent readers who can access a wide range of texts for pleasure and learning
  • Write with accuracy, creativity, and purpose across a variety of styles and subjects
  • Communicate effectively through spoken and written language
  • Have a broad and rich vocabulary that supports their learning and self-expression
  • Achieve or exceed age-related expectations in English
  • Be prepared for the next stage of their education with the skills needed to thrive academically and socially

We measure impact through formative and summative assessments, pupil voice, book scrutiny, and monitoring of teaching and learning. This ongoing evaluation ensures our curriculum is effective and responsive to pupil needs.
