The Harbour at Hudson Road provides a structured and supportive environment for Sunderland pupils from KS1 and KS2 with an EHCP for social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. Our staff specialise in working with children with SEND difficulties and pride themselves in identifying and supporting students with SEMH needs and contributing to a very successful school-wide approach to mental health and well-being.
We welcome up to 16 pupils to our Additionally Resourced Provision (ARP) in its own dedicated building on the Hudson Road site. We have two separate classrooms, a supportive social space as well as our own kitchen and garden area. The Harbour is part of the school so pupils can attend mainstream classes and activities when they are ready. As a provision, we contribute to the Hudson Road positive school culture that values emotional well-being and inclusivity, creating a more supportive and effective learning environment for all pupils.

At The Harbour we provide tailored support and interventions to meet the unique needs of each individual pupil. We understand that some children may face difficulties in expressing and managing their emotions and developing positive relationships. We aim to improve children’s social, emotional, and mental well-being, ultimately enhancing their learning and overall development.
We pride ourselves in creating a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment. We recognise that SEMH can stem from various factors: including trauma, adversity, or mental health needs. We focus on developing social skills, such as communication, empathy, and conflict resolution, to help students build positive relationships and navigate social situations effectively.
SEMH difficulties can significantly impact a student’s ability to learn and succeed academically. The Harbour addresses these barriers by providing individual targeted support and interventions that improve emotional regulation, social skills, and overall well-being.
By addressing SEMH needs, students are more likely to feel confident, engaged, and motivated in their learning, leading to improved academic outcomes.
We work closely with our pupils’ families to ensure a consistent and supportive approach to addressing students’ SEMH. The Harbour also works with external agencies, such as health professionals, Educational Psychology, outreach services and social workers, to provide specialised support and interventions.

We are very proud of The Harbour and welcome visitors by appointment. If you want to find out more about what we could provide to help your child, please contact the school office to make an appointment or to speak to our Headteacher Mrs Westgate or SENCO Mrs Platten.
