In Hudson Road Primary School Early Years, we support our children to become confident learners, and to grow in all areas of their development. The Early Years curriculum covers children from birth to 5 years and is implemented in our Nursery and Reception classes. Our Early Years curriculum for Nursery and Reception is aspirational and ambitious, and full of memorable first-hand experiences, with oracy and a ‘language rich’ focus at the centre. Oracy, in the Early Years, is a powerful tool for learning. We use planning based on the children’s interests and inquiries to direct our teaching and themed projects.

The framework sets out 3 prime areas of learning that underpin EVERYTHING in the early years:

Communication and Language:

The development of children’s spoken language underpins all seven areas of learning and development!

Personal, Social & Emotional Development:

Children’s personal, social and emotional development (PSED) is crucial for children to lead healthy and happy lives and is fundamental to their cognitive development.

Physical Development:

Physical activity is vital in children’s all-round development, enabling them to pursue happy, healthy and active lives.

There are 4 specific areas that help children to strengthen and apply the prime areas:

Literacy:

It is crucial for children to develop a life-long love of reading.  Language comprehension (necessary for both reading and writing) starts from birth. Skilled word reading is taught later. Writing involves transcription and composition.

Mathematics:

Developing a strong grounding in number and spatial reasoning is essential so that all children develop the necessary building blocks to excel mathematically.

Understanding the World:

Understanding the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community.

Expressive Arts and Design:

The development of children’s artistic and cultural awareness supports their imagination and creativity.

All our children in Nursery and Reception are taught early mathematics, reading and phonics to gain knowledge ready to start the KS1/2 primary curriculum.
